The past Friday evening, I had dinner at the Bar Room at the Modern with Ariel.
Since I have arrived there earlier than he did, I took the time to take in the atmosphere and the vibe of this place since it is so different than what I have experienced for lunch the last time I [...]

As a prelude to the Arcade Fire concert at the opening of the High Line Festival, Connie, Nicky and I were wandering around the bleakly corporate area of Midtown near Radio City in desperate need of some good food. After much deliberating, we decided to pop into the Bar Room at the Modern to get a sampling of some of their interesting and beautifully presented dishes. The Decor: (7/10) Shot of interior courtesy of The Wandering Eater The interior of the Modern is really quite pretty - clean lines, artfully placed plants and plenty of room around tables. The only gripe I had with the ambiance was really with the people in it - the...

This is arguably the most expensive lunch I ever had. Period. I had lunches from pricey restaurants (e.g. Le Bernardin a few years ago and recently Eleven Madison Park) by trying their prix fixe or tasting menu but it never come to the total that I have paid just a few days ago. You’ll understand [...]

MoMA Mia! A Return To The Bar Room at the Modern [but first, we discuss Iranian cinema]
For my birthday, Craig pretended to get me a membership to MoMA (The Museum of Modern Art). We showed up the other night to see Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami's documentary "Homework," and when Craig opened the envelope that came from...

The Bar Room at The Modern: Art in Motion
Feb 02, 2007
For years, I have loved eating at museums… in Europe (where the food is just downright great) and in the US (where the food can sway between terrific and a sandwich shelf at 7-11).

Needle Off the Record Moment: Bar Room at the Modern
Three stars for the Bar Room at the Modern?!? Is the Times' Bruni on crack? I'm not dissing the food, but let's face it: the Bar Room at the Modern is a major sheila hangout. If you don't know what a sheila is, she's the kind of 20-something girl who orders Champagne by the glass, favors low-cut and/or backless tops, and generally travels in packs to "hot" places found on Citysearch.

Open now for almost two years, the Modern’s Bar Room is nearly as packed with eager eaters as it was when it opened. This is after all a Danny Meyer restaurant, the same restauranteur behind the visionary Union Square Cafe, Tabla, 11 Madison Park, and five other restaurants across town and, together with Meyer’s Gramercy Tavern, the recipient of one star from Le Guide Michelin. And like these other restaurants, everything about the room indicates a space that has been thought through with astonishing attention to detail: a zen-like entrance tunnel empties into a space that is spare but bustling with movement; tables are precisely set with stylized, minimalist silverware, and pint-sized Eames-style chairs cosy up to rows of tables in front of a translucent white wall that separates the Bar Room from the Dining Room. The style is modern European, or a kind of B&B Italia meets Terence Conran. In fact, the Modern reminds me of nothing so much as a Conran eatery- in a sense, the Modern is New York’s Plateau.

So, go figure -- people aren't so freaked out about flying anymore. I know this because I've spent all day battling the other several thousand San Franciscans trying to get to JFK.

Last weekend, I wanted to try a couple of the "little sister" restaurants of the city’s fine dining rooms. After our food orgy at the Aquavit Cafe on Friday night, we proceeded to the Bar Room at The Modern on Saturday. The atmosphere here is far more raucous and lively than at the sedate Aquavit. It is located in the Museum of Modern Art, although there is a separate street entrance. The Bar Room has been a hit – Frank Bruni even suggests that it is more enjoyable than the fine dining room adjoining it – and there is the ever-so-slight hint that the staff know you’re at they’re mercy. However, I was pleased that they were willing to transfer our bar tab to our table, something that even much fancier restaurants will often refuse to do.

I haven’t been back to the new MoMA ever since it reopened in its grand, newly renovated space in midtown Manhattan. The twenty-dollar entrance fee is a little too steep for a lazy Saturday afternoon but when Esquire magazine named Danny Meyer’s The Modern restaurant of the year, I knew I had to make a return trip. It also just recently received one star from the Michelin and that’s a very big accomplishment considering it just opened a year ago.

Danny of A Year In Food contacted me recently and asked if we could go on a joint food-blogging expedition. I said "sure" and we agreed to sample the modern food in the bar room of The Modern.

We really don't go to restaurants very much, contrary to what my workmates seem to think. I'm constantly being asked for restaurant recommendations by people who actually eat out much more frequently than I do. I'm not bad at finding places that are a good value -- interesting ethnic places with good fresh food, fun neighborhood joints, swank restaurants that have great lunch deals or places that you want to try during Restaurant Week. G and I actually missed Restaurant Week completely this year -- both installments. I was probably making something at home...maybe enchiladas with green sauce or Russian shepherd's pie. I would estimate that about 95 percent of the time, we eat at home. And we eat reasonable, interesting, fresh, home-cooked food.
